These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the Purposeful Safaris website at www.purposefulsafaris.com and the safari services provided by Purposeful Safaris Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (“we”, “us”, “our”).
By using our website or engaging our services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. Please read them carefully before submitting an enquiry or making a booking. If you do not agree, please do not use our website or services.
These Terms should be read alongside our Privacy Policy, which sets out how we handle your personal data.
Purposeful Safaris designs and operates a small number of private luxury safari journeys across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda each year. Our services include:
We act as the organiser of your safari and take responsibility for the overall quality and delivery of the experience. We work with carefully selected in-country operators, guides and lodges as our service partners.
Submitting a planning enquiry does not constitute a booking and creates no financial obligation on either party. We respond to every enquiry personally within 24 hours. The planning process — including any calls, outline itineraries and revisions — is provided free of charge and without obligation.
A booking is confirmed when we issue you a written booking confirmation and you pay the required deposit. Verbal agreements do not constitute a confirmed booking. We reserve the right to decline a booking at our discretion, including where our annual capacity has been reached.
| Payment | Amount | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | 30% of total journey cost | Due within 7 days of booking confirmation to secure dates and lodge reservations |
| Final balance | Remaining 70% | Due 60 days before departure |
| Late bookings | 100% of total cost | Bookings made within 60 days of departure require full payment at time of booking |
Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda ($1,500 per person) must be paid in full at time of booking confirmation, as they are purchased immediately and are non-refundable once purchased. This is clearly indicated in all gorilla trekking itinerary quotes.
All prices quoted are in US Dollars unless otherwise stated. Prices are confirmed at the time of booking and will not increase once a deposit has been paid, except in the case of government-imposed tax changes that affect park fees or levies. We will notify you of any such changes before they are applied.
Our website prices are indicative. The exact price for your specific itinerary, dates and party size will be confirmed in your written quote.
Travel insurance is required for all bookings. Your policy should cover cancellation for any reason. The cancellation charges below represent costs we incur from our in-country partners and cannot be waived.
| Notice before departure | Cancellation charge |
|---|---|
| More than 90 days | Loss of deposit (30% of total cost) |
| 60–90 days | 50% of total journey cost |
| 30–60 days | 75% of total journey cost |
| Less than 30 days | 100% of total journey cost |
| Gorilla trekking permits | 100% non-refundable once purchased (regardless of cancellation timing) |
Cancellations must be made in writing by email to hello@purposefulsafaris.com. The cancellation date is the date we receive written notice.
We will use reasonable efforts to accommodate amendments to confirmed bookings (changes to dates, itinerary, party size). Amendments are subject to availability and may incur costs from suppliers. We will advise you of any costs before confirming an amendment.
In the unlikely event that we cancel your booking or make a significant change to your itinerary — other than for reasons of force majeure — we will offer you a full refund or an alternative journey of comparable value. A significant change is defined as a change to the country of travel, a change of more than 24 hours to your departure or return date, or a downgrade in accommodation standard.
Travel insurance is a requirement for all Purposeful Safaris bookings. We will request confirmation that you hold a valid policy before departure.
Your policy must cover, at minimum:
We recommend obtaining specialist safari travel insurance rather than standard travel insurance, as some standard policies exclude safari activities or have insufficient medical evacuation cover for remote East African locations. We are happy to suggest reputable specialist providers — contact us at hello@purposefulsafaris.com.
We do not sell travel insurance and receive no commission from insurance providers.
Your safari involves services provided by third parties — including lodges and camps, airlines, ground transportation operators, park authorities and professional guides. These suppliers operate under their own terms and conditions.
While we select our in-country partners carefully and maintain direct relationships with them, we are not liable for any loss, damage, injury or disappointment arising from the acts or omissions of third-party suppliers. This includes, but is not limited to, lodge closures, flight delays or cancellations, park access restrictions and changes to conservation fee structures.
In the event of a supplier failure, we will use reasonable efforts to source an appropriate alternative. Where this results in a material downgrade, we will discuss compensation or a partial credit with you.
We cannot guarantee specific wildlife sightings. Wildlife moves unpredictably and in natural ecosystems; no guide, however experienced, can guarantee that you will see a particular species or event, including river crossings during the Great Migration. Our guides are selected for their knowledge and expertise; we cannot accept liability for the absence of specific sightings.
The Purpose Day is an opt-in element included in all Purposeful Safaris itineraries. By participating, you agree to the following:
The financial impact contribution included in your booking is a component of our pricing model, not a separate charitable donation. It is directed to partner schools and conservation programmes as described in our Impact page. The contribution is non-refundable in the event that you choose not to participate in the Purpose Day.
By using our website you agree to use it only for lawful purposes and in a way that does not infringe the rights of others or restrict or inhibit their use of the website.
You must not:
We reserve the right to withdraw access to the website at any time without notice.

As a business providing travel services, we comply with the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 where applicable. Your statutory rights are not affected by these Terms.
We are not liable for failure to perform our obligations where such failure results from events beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to:
In the event of force majeure, we will notify you as soon as practicable and will use reasonable efforts to offer an alternative departure date or itinerary. Where an alternative is not possible, we will discuss a refund of any amounts paid, less any non-recoverable costs already incurred on your behalf.
We strongly recommend that your travel insurance policy covers cancellation and curtailment due to force majeure events.
