You arrive into Nairobi and transfer directly to a private conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau — a three-hour drive north that takes you from city noise into one of Kenya's most important wildlife ecosystems. Laikipia is where several endangered species — black rhino, Grevy's zebra, wild dog — are actively protected on private and community land. Your first afternoon is unstructured: arrival, orientation, a walk around the conservancy with your guide. The pace of the trip starts here, deliberately slow.

Two full days in Laikipia, on foot as much as possible. Walking safaris in Laikipia are managed differently to vehicle-based game drives: smaller groups, slower pace, a guide who explains the ecosystem in terms that hold for a seven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old simultaneously. Black rhino tracking — with a conservation team that works in the conservancy — is available for children twelve and older. Younger children join a shorter morning walk and spend the afternoon at the conservancy's education programme about Grevy's zebra conservation.

A full day at our partner primary school in the Laikipia region — one we have worked with since 2021. Children from your family are matched by age to local classes and spend the morning alongside Kenyan students their own age: attending lessons, participating in the school's sports session, sharing lunch in the courtyard. Parents facilitate a session for the older students — whatever they know how to teach: careers, how a business works, a practical skill. The afternoon is less structured: conversation, art, exchange. Most children on this trip say the Purpose Day is the thing they talk about afterwards.

A short flight takes you from Laikipia into the Maasai Mara — specifically the Mara Triangle, the privately managed western section where vehicle numbers are controlled and the game density is extraordinary. Three days here: two full days of game drives (dawn and dusk, with a long lunch break back at camp), and one morning that follows a lion pride your guide knows well. If your dates fall between July and October, you will almost certainly see wildebeest crossings. If they don't, the resident cat population and the quality of the guide make the Mara exceptional year-round.

An optional two-day extension into Tanzania's northern Serengeti gives the trip a final act that is genuinely different to what came before: bigger, wider, less intimately scaled than the Mara. If you choose not to extend, the final morning in the Mara is a long drive back along the river before your flight north to Nairobi and connection home. Either way, the trip ends with dinner in Nairobi if timing allows — a meal that functions as the family's debrief, the space to talk about what happened before you return to ordinary life.
