The Journey

Deeply romantic.
Genuinely meaningful.

Most honeymoon safaris are indistinguishable from each other: a luxury tented camp, a champagne sundowner, a morning with the big cats. All of it is beautiful. None of it is particularly specific to you. The Honeymoon With A Heart is designed for couples who want those things — and also want the trip to mean something more than the photographs it produces.

The journey moves from the Maasai Mara’s private conservancies through Tanzania’s Serengeti and onto the Zanzibar coast — bush to beach, wildlife to ocean, structure to total freedom. The Purpose Day in this itinerary is adapted for two: an intimate visit to a community enterprise in the Mara region run by women, which is a genuinely different experience to the school visit format and one that most couples find unexpectedly moving.

The lodges are chosen for privacy and quality above all else. Every camp has fewer than twelve guests. Every suite has a private veranda with an unobstructed view. The guiding is exceptional — because exceptional guiding is the difference between a pleasant game drive and a morning you talk about for the next twenty years.

Day by Day

Every day
considered.

You fly directly from Nairobi into the Mara Triangle — a 45-minute flight that deposits you in a completely different world. Arrival is at the airstrip, where your guide meets you and drives you to camp along the river. Your first evening is quiet: a sunset game drive, dinner on the veranda, a night with the sounds of the bush outside the tent canvas. The camp has twelve guests maximum. You will not feel crowded.

Two full days in the Mara Triangle, with your guide and your vehicle. The Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy — vehicle numbers are controlled, the roads are maintained, and the game viewing is the best in Kenya. Your guide knows this ecosystem in detail: the resident lion prides, the cheetah mothers with cubs, the leopard that sleeps in the fig tree two kilometres from camp. Breakfast is served in the bush on both mornings. One evening is a private dinner on the riverbank.

A morning of game driving, then a different afternoon: a visit to a women-run community enterprise in the Mara region — one that your guide introduced us to four years ago and that we have supported since. The enterprise makes and sells textile goods; the visit is an opportunity to understand the work and the economics behind it, to buy directly if you choose, and to have a conversation that is not tourism. Two hours, genuinely interesting, quietly unlike anything else on the itinerary.

A short flight into Tanzania's northern Serengeti, where the landscape shifts from the Mara's intimate valleys to something much wider and more open. Two days here: the pace is unhurried, the game drives follow your guide's instincts rather than a fixed schedule, and one afternoon is reserved for doing nothing at all — reading, sleeping in the heat, watching the plains from your tent. The Serengeti at this scale requires patience; the rewards for that patience are extraordinary.

A flight to Zanzibar. The transition from bush to ocean is one of the great gear-shifts in East Africa travel — the smell of the air changes, the light changes, the pace changes completely. Two nights: one in Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site with the most interesting food in the Indian Ocean) and one at a private beach property on the north coast. The final day is entirely unstructured. You will not want to leave.

Where You Stay

Properties chosen
with specific reason.

Nights 1–4 · Mara Triangle

Private River Camp

Fewer than twelve guests. Your suite is a full standing tent with a king bed, an open-air bathroom, and a veranda directly on the river. The camp manager has been here for seven years. The service is attentive without being intrusive — which is the hardest thing in hospitality to achieve.

Nights 5–6 · Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti Private Camp

Eight tents, each positioned to face the sunrise over the plains. The camp has been here long enough to know which direction the herds move in each season. Your guide stays at the camp throughout — there are no hand-offs to a different person in Tanzania.

The Purpose Day

The enterprise visit.
Not the usual format.

The Purpose Day on this itinerary is not a school visit. It is a visit to a women-run textile enterprise in the Mara region — a business that we have supported and worked with for four years. The visit is an afternoon: the founders of the enterprise show you how the work is done, explain the economics of what they have built, and you have a conversation that is simply a conversation between people with different experiences. You can buy directly. You can ask anything. The financial contribution from your booking continues to support the enterprise year-round, not just on the day. Most couples describe this as the afternoon they talk about most when they get home.

Who This Journey is For

This journey works well for couples who —

"We were both slightly suspicious of the 'responsible tourism' framing before we went. Afterwards we understood it wasn't framing — it was just what the company is. The enterprise visit was two hours of our nine days. It changed how we thought about the whole trip."
