The Journey

Not rest. Not adventure.
Something more useful than both.

This trip is for people who need to think. Not who want to relax — relaxation is usually available at home. Who need uninterrupted time in a place that is genuinely demanding of their attention, with a guide who is capable of silence as well as conversation, and a structure that is firm enough to hold the days together without filling them.

Laikipia is the right place for this. It is not the Mara: there are no vehicle convoys, no fixed departure times, no infrastructure built around the idea of keeping you comfortable and entertained simultaneously. It is open land, managed for conservation, with walking safaris that take you into the bush on foot — which is a different experience to a game drive in a way that is difficult to explain until you have done it.

Six days. One guide. A conservancy with space enough to feel alone in it. The Purpose Day on this trip is entirely optional and entirely private — if you want it, it is there. If you need the day for something else, it disappears from the itinerary without discussion.

Day by Day

Every day
considered.

You arrive at the conservancy in the afternoon — enough time to walk the perimeter with your guide before the light goes. Dinner is simple. There is no programme for the evening. The guide will tell you what the week looks like; after that, the specifics are yours to shape.

A full day on foot. Your guide sets the pace, which is slower than you expect. Walking safari in Laikipia covers a few kilometres over five or six hours — it is not a hike. You stop when something is worth stopping for, which is often. The guide's knowledge of the landscape at ground level is different to anything available from a vehicle. By the end of the day your legs will be tired and your mind will have been somewhere else entirely.

This day has no programme. There is a vehicle available if you want to drive. There is a guide available if you want to walk. The library at the conservancy has books. The veranda has a view. Most guests who take this trip say day three is the one they needed most.

If you want it: a private visit to a partner school in the Laikipia region. This is a solo version of the Purpose Day — no group, no fixed structure, a conversation with the headteacher and one or two staff about the school and its work. You can facilitate a session with students if there is something you can actually teach. You can spend the morning in the classroom observing. You can simply be there. The visit is genuinely interesting. It is also genuinely optional.

The final two days include the conservancy's rhino tracking programme — on foot, with the conservation team, following the black rhino population that the conservancy manages. It takes most of a morning and covers terrain that the vehicle routes don't reach. The final evening is dinner outside. The final morning is your own, before the transfer back to Nairobi.

Where You Stay

Properties chosen
with specific reason.

Nights 1–6 · Laikipia Plateau

Private Laikipia Conservancy

A working conservation property — not a hotel. Your accommodation is a private cottage or suite with a veranda facing the open land. The conservancy team manages black rhino, Grevy’s zebra and African wild dog on the same property. Meals are served at the main house; there is one other table at most. The quality of silence here is exceptional.

The Purpose Day

Solo. Private. No programme.

The Purpose Day on the Solo Reset is not the school classroom format used in the group journeys. It is a private visit — you and your guide, a morning with the headteacher of our partner school, a conversation about what they are building and where they need support. If you have something specific to offer — a professional skill, a useful conversation, a practical workshop — we can facilitate it. If you want to observe rather than participate, that is equally welcome. The financial contribution from your booking continues to support the school year-round regardless of whether you visit. The option is there; the obligation is not.

Who This Journey is For

This trip is designed for —

"I told my team I was going on safari. I didn't tell them what I was actually doing, which was sitting on a veranda for three days deciding what I wanted to do with the next ten years. The guide figured this out by day two and left me alone in exactly the right way."
