The Journey
Most Rwanda itineraries are built backwards from the gorilla permit: two days in Volcanoes National Park, a polite visit to Kigali, departure. The gorilla hour is extraordinary — there is nothing else quite like it in the natural world — but designing an entire journey around sixty minutes in the forest undersells what Rwanda actually is.
Kigali is a city that consistently surprises visitors who arrive with modest expectations. Contemporary art, speciality coffee, thoughtful restaurants, a memorial to the 1994 genocide that is among the most important public spaces in Africa — and a culture that has processed extraordinary historical trauma with a directness and intelligence that makes every conversation about the country feel substantive. Two days in Kigali, properly structured, is not a preamble to the gorillas. It is the other half of a genuinely rich journey.
The Purpose Day on this itinerary is based in Kigali — a visit to a creative enterprise working at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary design. The work is interesting; the conversation about what it means to build something in Rwanda in 2025 is more interesting still.
Day by Day
You arrive into Kigali International Airport and are met by your guide. The drive into the city takes twenty minutes — long enough to understand that this is not the Africa most visitors expect. Check in, lunch, an afternoon walk through the Nyamirambo neighbourhood with the guide: the oldest part of the city, the most lived-in, the most interesting. Dinner in the evening at one of the city's serious restaurants.
A full day in Kigali, structured around the city's depth rather than its highlights. Morning: the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a visit that is sobering, important, and unlike anything else on this itinerary. Midday: the Purpose Day enterprise visit — a Kigali-based creative business run by Rwandan designers. Afternoon: Inema Arts Centre, Rwanda's leading contemporary art space. Evening: dinner in the Kimihurura district, where the city's best food is happening.
A two-and-a-half-hour drive northwest from Kigali into the volcanic highlands. The landscape changes completely: terraced hills, eucalyptus forest, the Virunga peaks emerging through cloud. Arrival at the lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon: the gorilla briefing at the park headquarters, where a ranger explains what will happen the following morning — the trekking rules, what to expect, how to behave in the presence of a gorilla family. Dinner at the lodge.
An early start. You are assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families by the park rangers based on fitness level and group preference. The trek takes between one and four hours depending on where the gorillas have moved — through bamboo forest, up steep volcanic slopes, following the trackers who have been with the gorillas since dawn. When you find the family, you have one hour. The silverback. The mothers with infants. The juveniles playing. Most guests are unable to describe it adequately afterwards. That is not a cliché; it is an accurate observation.
A second gorilla permit is available and strongly recommended — no two treks are the same, the family behaviour is different, and the hour passes faster than it should. Alternatively: golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forest at the base of the Virungas, which is a genuinely joyful experience at a fraction of the gorilla permit cost. Return to Kigali on day five for a final night; departure on day six, or extension into Akagera National Park for those who want a savannah wildlife component.

Where You Stay
Nights 1–2 · Kigali
A small, design-led property in the Kimihurura district — the area of the city where the best restaurants and the most interesting creative businesses are located. The hotel works with local artisans on its interiors, sources its food from Rwandan producers, and has a staff team that knows the city properly.
Nights 3–5 · Volcanoes National Park
Positioned at 2,500 metres on the slopes below the Virunga volcanoes — cold at night, extraordinary in the morning when the mist clears and the peaks are visible. The lodge has been here long enough to have a serious conservation relationship with the park. The fire in the sitting room on the evening after your trek is one of the better places to process what you have just seen.
The Purpose Day
The Purpose Day on this journey is based in Kigali, not in a rural school. We work with a Rwandan-owned creative business that operates at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary design — employing artisans whose skills would otherwise have no commercial outlet in the city. The visit is a morning: the founders walk you through the work, the supply chain, the economics of what they are building. You can buy work directly. The conversation about what it means to build a business in Rwanda in 2025 is among the most interesting we have encountered on any Purpose Day.
